I am going to say something that nobody wants to hear in October. If you want holiday cards in your mailbox before December, you need to book your session this week! Not next week. Not after Halloween. This week.
I know how that sounds. But every year without fail I watch the same thing happen. Families wait until November thinking they still have time, and by then the editing queue is full, the printing timelines have stretched, and the cards arrive on December 22nd instead of December 5th or they do not arrive at all. I do not want that to be your story this year.
So here is the honest timeline you need to work backwards from.
Table of Contents

The Timeline for Family Photos and Holiday Cards
Cards in your mailbox: December 1 to 10
This is the goal. Work backwards from here.
Card order placed: November 15 at the absolute latest
Most printing companies need ten to fourteen business days during the holiday season, and that estimate assumes nothing goes wrong. Order early and add a buffer for shipping delays, which are almost guaranteed in November and December.
Card design finalized: November 10
Once you have your gallery you will need time to choose your favorites, pick a design, write your message, and proof everything before you submit the order. Give yourself at least a week for this step. You will change your mind at least once.
Gallery delivered: October 20 to 25
This is when you will have your images in hand and ready to work with. Which means your session needs to happen now.
Session date: No later than October 7 to 10
I need two to three weeks to edit your gallery with the care it deserves. Rushing that process is not something I am willing to do. The quality of your images matters too much.
If you are reading this in early October, you are right at the edge of the window. If you are reading this in mid-October, reach out immediately and we will see what we can do.

Why the timeline is always tighter than you think
A few things slow down the holiday card process that most people do not account for until it is too late.
Editing takes time. I put real care into every gallery and that does not happen in a day or two. A realistic editing window is two to three weeks after your session date.
Picking your favorites is harder than it looks. Once you receive your gallery you will want to look through every image carefully, show your partner, sleep on it, and change your mind at least once. Give yourself a full week for this step, not an afternoon.
Printing and shipping during the holidays is slower than the estimated delivery date suggests. Order earlier than you think you need to and always choose a shipping method with tracking.
Life happens in November. Thanksgiving, travel, sick kids, work deadlines. Every year something comes up in November and every year it costs people precious days in an already tight window. Build margin into every step.

Choosing a card that actually reflects your family
Once you have your images the card design process is honestly the fun part. A few things to keep in mind.
Keep it simple. A clean design with one or two strong images lets your photos do the work. Avoid templates that are so busy the faces get lost.
Match the card to your photo style. If your session is light and airy, choose a card with a light, minimal background. If your images are warm and golden, go for something with a little more richness to it.
Order more than you think you need. You will always remember someone you forgot. Add at least ten to fifteen to your final count.
Write something personal inside. Even a short handwritten note makes a card feel different. People keep the ones that feel like they were actually meant for them.

What to do if you have already missed the window
First, do not panic.
If getting a session done in time for cards is no longer realistic, a portrait session still makes one of the most meaningful holiday gifts you can give. A framed print of your family for grandparents, a gift certificate for a new mom who deserves a session of her own, a gallery to hang in your home in the new year. None of those things have a holiday card deadline.
And if you want to plan ahead so next year is different, reach out now. I am already taking inquiries for 2027 fall sessions and the families who book early never have to stress about this timeline.

Ready to book before the window closes?
I have a small number of fall session spots remaining on my 2026 calendar. If you want photos done in time for holiday cards and gifts, now is the time.

Shelby is a family photographer serving Southern Maryland, King George, Fredericksburg, and Richmond who photographs real life. She has a gift for getting kids to actually be themselves in front of a camera, and for capturing the moments parents didn’t even know they needed. Families who work with her tend to forget she’s even there, which is exactly the point. Her clients know her as their photographer. Their kids know her as Aunt Shelby.
