When Is the Best Time to Book a Newborn Session

For Shelby McKimmie Photography clients, I reserve the week of your due date at the time of booking. This ensures that I can provide you with a flexible and stress-free experience when your little one arrives. Because newborns arrive on their own schedule, my calendar fills up quickly. Booking in advance allows me to prioritize your session and accommodate your family when the baby is here.

I love keeping in touch with my expecting moms throughout their pregnancy. Many moms share sonogram pictures and updates, which I cherish! While this isn’t required, it helps me get to know you and your family before your newborn session.

What If I Have a Scheduled C-Section

If you’re having a C-section, I ask that you let me know as soon as your provider schedules your delivery date. Of course, things change, and I understand that flexibility is key when it comes to newborn photography. Rest assured, I will adjust your session as needed to accommodate any shifts in your birth plan.

When Should I Schedule My Newborn Photography Session

Once your baby has arrived, reach out to me as soon as possible to finalize your session date. The best time to capture newborn portraits is when your baby is between 5 and 10 days old. During this time, newborns are typically sleepier and more relaxed, allowing for a peaceful and seamless session.

However, I understand that circumstances vary. My own son wasn’t discharged until five days old, and new moms need time to rest and recover. That’s why I offer extended newborn sessions up to 30 days old, depending on your situation. A newborn session at 19 days old is always better than no session at all! Your baby will still be small enough to capture those once-in-a-lifetime early moments.

I schedule all newborn sessions for 10 AM, as this is when most homes have the best natural light. If your space has smaller windows or trees blocking the light, don’t worry! I always bring a flash to ensure we capture bright, timeless portraits no matter the lighting conditions.
